Helping a Loved One through the Grieving Process
Many of us have experienced the bitter pain of losing someone we love and knowing that someone cares and is there for us helps to relieve some of the pain. Therefore, it is important that we do the same for those who are grieving and hurting. For some of us, we may have found our comfort and peace in God as we allowed the light of Jesus to touch our hearts. The love of God filled our lives and we found peace in the fact that God cared for us and is watching over us. We should share the same love to those who are Grieving The Loss of a loved one. We must help them experience what the love of God is like.
In 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4, Paul told the citizens of Corinthians, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves received from God”. Just as God comforted us in our times of need, we should help comfort others in their times of grieving.
One way we can help the person recover is by listening to them. Sometimes, all people really want is an avenue to express themselves and their emotions. Does it not feel nice when you know someone is genuinely interested in listening to you? When we listen, we should be focused on the person alone and empathize with what the person is feeling – not to become a wall to talk to but a person willing to listen. You may have wonderful advice to offer to the person but make sure that it doesn’t become a consulting session. Give the person space to share their thoughts and feelings and they will learn to trust and share their pain with you. Just as Christ carried the burden of the cross, we should help carry the burden of our brothers and sisters who are in need.
During your sharing sessions with the person, take time to pray and bring any problems, concerns, and hurt before God. God wants to be at the center of everything we do because in the end, He will be the one who will heal the heart of the person who is grieving. As Christians, we are taught to intercede for others, presenting the requests before the throne of God. In James 5: 16b it states that “the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective”. As we intercede for others, we are calling upon the hand of God to work into the lives of those we are praying for. Let us learn to call upon God in times of need and trust in faith that He will help comfort those who are grieving.
